Oktoberfest 2015: "Beers for the Bridge"

Oktoberfest is the world's largest beer festival. Every year, Oktoberfest is held in Munich over sixteen days. This celebration is an important part of Bavarian culture - but it's global too! Over six million people from around the world attend Oktoberfest in Munich. Many other cities in Germany and throughout the world are inspired to hold similar Oktoberfest parties, and Washington, D.C. is no exception.

This year, the Rotary Club of Dupont Circle will be holding its first annual Oktoberfest celebration, with proceeds benefiting our club's footbridge project. The Oktoberfest fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, October 28th from 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. at the Bier Baron Tavern in Dupont Circle. Don’t miss out! There will be a DJ, German beer, German music, German food, and yes, Germans, such as myself. Feel free to come in your favorite Bavarian fashion to earn a price at the costume contest!

Even better: not only will you have a fun time at the event, but your support will also make a difference for those outside of our hub. In the spirit of a city dedicated to international development, the proceeds of the fundraiser will go towards a charitable initiative to building a footbridge for school children in Murehwa, Zimbabwe.

This bridge connects local students to their school, which is located on the opposite banks of the Shayanhowe River, allowing for continued access to education during the rainy season (December to April). In the last five years alone, 12 students and two adults drowned in the river, which regularly floods during the rainy season and is known for its exceptionally strong current. Approximately 550 of the 4,200 primary and secondary school students enrolled in the Chemhondoro School cross the river each day.
